Developing Science Identity

The Y-CITYSCI research team at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville is developing an additional project that might interest you. The team hopes to investigate how scientists and experts in STEM fields develop their identities as scientists. We are interested in further understanding how scientists develop their science identity and what experiences help to promote development of this identity. We are also interested in understanding scientists’ perspectives on how they fit in with others in their STEM field. It is important for STEM education researchers to understand how scientists and experts develop and maintain their identity within their field of study, as well as how science community integration plays into the formation of science identity. It is also important for researchers to understand what factors contribute to forming a science identity. The research team at the STEM Center is interested in investigating if community integration, attitudes toward science, and external recognition as a scientist, in conjunction with already understood contributing factors, have any effect on the development of an individual’s science identity.

This research will be conducted with scientists and graduate students in STEM fields around the St. Louis metropolitan area. Stay tuned for more updates on this project!
