Today’s blog post is brought to you by Candi Johnson.
This summer, Y-CITYSCI is hosting a summer camp for current 8th through 12th graders that attend school in Madison, Venice, Brooklyn, Granite City, and East Alton, IL. This free camp will be held in Madison, IL on Monday through Friday, from July 6th to July 16th. Our program is concentrated around student-driven research projects. Participants will work in teams to create their own research questions that enable them to learn more about the environmental quality in their community. We have many hands-on activities planned for a fun summer!
We will begin with a Research Resource Showcase, allowing our participants to meet scientists, explore scientific tools, try out environmental monitors, and use citizen science apps such as iNaturalist. After identifying what resources interest our participants, they can work with their team members to create a research project that answers a question of interest to them. Throughout the following two weeks, participants will conduct research by collecting data throughout their community, learn to analyze that data, and eventually present their data to family and friends.
We have plans for guest speakers, a guided nature hike, and field trips to the SIUE campus to visit working science labs including that of Dr. Adriana Martinez. Along with the engaging research experience, we will provide breakfast, snacks, lunch, transportation, and a t-shirt. The Y-CITYSCI team looks forward to exploring your research questions this summer! Please contact our Program Coordinator, Candi Johnson, at firstname.lastname@example.org with any questions.
