Welcome Y-CITYSCI Graduate Assistants!


The STEM Center at SIUE and the Y-CITYSCI team would like to welcome back our new and returning graduate students! 

New Graduate Assistant – Lisa

Lisa graduated from Webster University in St. Louis, MO with my bachelor of science in biology and an emphasis in research and technology. Currently, Lisa is pursuing a master’s of environmental science at SIUE. Lisa is a research assistant in the STEM Center working on Y-CITYSCI, a program that helps youth underrepresented in the sciences participate in authentic science experiences through citizen science. With this program, the STEM Center is also researching how science participation through citizen science affects students’ science identity development. Welcome to the team, Lisa!


New Graduate Assistant – Cristal 

Cristal assists with various programs at the STEM Center supporting both student program and education research. Cristal received her B.A. in Psychology from Lindenwood University. Cristal is continuing her education at SIUE with a Master’s in Social Work. Her primary interest is mental health therapy with children, adolescents, and adults, with a focus on Hispanic/Latinx population . Cristal also enjoys swimming, hiking, making pottery, and painting. Welcome to the team, Cristal!


Returning Graduate Assistant – Xander 

Xander is currently pursuing a master’s of science in environmental science at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville with a focus on technology and assessment. His graduate research focuses on fluvial geomorphology and large wood interactions. He obtained a bachelor of science in biological sciences from Lindenwood University and currently works as an analytical chemist analyzing mercury containing environmental samples. His previous experience includes plant tissue culture and plant transformation, agar media preparation, educational labs, environmental sampling, and a hazmat tech. Xander currently supports curriculum development for the STEM Center’s Y-CITYSCI program and also serves in the Missouri National Guard. Welcome back, Xander!
