Hello, my name is Waleska! I am a graduate assistant in SIUE’s STEM Center working on the Science Education Partnership Award (SEPA) Environmental Health Investigators program. I am currently pursuing my master’s degree in environmental sciences with a focus on environmental education. I have a bachelor degree in science teaching from the University of São Paulo. As a graduate assistant, I have been helping to develop the curriculum for Environmental Health Investigators with my team. Here are some images of me enjoying nature in Madison County, IL.
I am passionate about sustainable actions and teaching others about it. I come from one of the largest cities in the world, São Paulo, Brazil. The herbs in the picture above are from a vertical herb garden that I built with a group of youth in an underserved community in São Paulo. We decided to make a vertical garden because we did not have enough space to make a traditional one. People from big cities think they cannot garden because they do not have space for it. However, we can still be creative and make gardens in small spaces. Growing your own food in a garden is a smart way to save money on delicious, fresh, produce and exemplifies a sustainable action. I want to keep helping other communities to practice sustainable actions!
